Addition by subtraction
yuppienomad has formulated a new proof for me. Thinking back on it, it encapsulates what many of my female friends have told me from time to time (e.g. Claudia, Ink, etc.), especially when I'm talking about issues of the feminine persuasion or when I'm giving advice or both.
I usually give compliments because I like to make my friends feel good. But dammit, I hate to be a fluff, so I always followup with a sarcastic or dumb remark to dull the edge. Can't be helped. Let's say if I tell my friends:
- 'You look good in that dress', I'll inevitably follow up with 'But don't eat too much during the date', or
- 'The guy's an asshole and you deserve better' followed by 'But ya know, he was cool when we hung out together', or
- 'Girls look better than guys [my note: their bodies are so.. mmmmm]' followed by 'Until they get fat after they hit 27',
- and so on.
Somewhere in south Hanoi today, yuppienomad turns to me and said "Ya know, once in a while it would be cool if you just knew when to stop talking. j.fisher minus one is who I wanna talk to."
Looking back, not such a bad idea. I would be awesome (if awesome meant being cool with chicks) if I can follow: j.fisher - 1 = n, where n is cool points^(not putting foot in mouth).
But then again... girls don't know what they're talking about. Pfffft.
sebastian's all about those kinda comments (less now but definitely when we were in school). i called them compliments with a kick.
