Happier
Guster's music was familiar, like the friend who agreed with all my dreams, through anxiety and vindication.
Ink and I went to the Guster concert in Philadelphia this weekend (ok, so Ink got free tickets from Y100 – she rawks! – and I tagged along.. ) Anyways, at one point, when the band was going through their new stuff, we looked at each other and blurted, "Wait, are we crazy? Are we all like the other old people who always think that old music in their times were better?"
But we did. Guster's old stuff was better. Dynamic. Relevant. Promising.
But then again, so was I in my early twenties. The world was all saturated with promises. As a twentysomething, the only thing holding me back was my sense of self-pity.
Guster's music was familiar, like the friend who agreed with all my dreams, through anxiety and vindication.
Anyways, when the first beats to "Happier" got started, we screamed like little girls cause here we are, aged and a little bit stung from the inequities of adulthood, and we can still go back in time to feel that familiar angst. Weirdly enough, it made me happier. (I'm now jumping on my bed singing along):
Guster - Happier (excerpt)
So go on, if this will make you happier
It got you this far, do what you have to
(Well you knew this would come)
And you're gone now
(And you've left me all alone)
And did it make you happier?
(And you're lost and long gone, don't take it so seriously)
It wasn't that hard
(Go on and get goin, I'm fine on my own)
Did what you had to
(We got you this far, finally got it figured out)
i always like the old stuff better! old weezer, old death cab, old guster.
maybe i'm simply old. after all - isn't it all the old folks who keep thinking back to old times and lamenting how much better they were?
