Newsflash: Sororities like good looking girls

CBS News is making a big brouhaha over this story: a sorority in Indiana apparently cut 23 out of 35 rushees because they were ugly.

Thirty-five sisters were interviewed in November, and 23 were deemed insufficiently committed to the sorority and recruitment. Just before final exams in December, they were told to leave.

They included every woman who was overweight as well as the only black, Korean and Vietnamese members. Even the chapter's president was kicked out. The 12 who remained were slim and conventionally pretty.

What makes this story great is that it made the news.  What's next? The Math & Science club rejecting meat heads?  Pretty people rule. Although when I went to college, there were some pretty ugly sisters in the sororities.. (KDPhi, spread them...)I've always wondered why people felt the need to be in the Greek system.  What's the difference between hanging out on a Sat puking in the bathroom with your friends versus doing the same exact thing with your 'sisters'?

It's also funny because CBS can't write:

The last straw for Holloway was a recruiting event in November for DePauw freshmen, for which "blond" and "skinny" sorority members from Indiana University were brought in, she told the Indianapolis Star, for which she has worked as a reporting intern.

Whaa?  'For which'?? I think a fifth grader can write better than this.

Yes, you're right, this really is no surprise... however it's one of those dirty little secrets that no one likes to talk about. No one wants to admit that sororities and fraternities tend to admit members based on superficial reasons. Oh, and when you wonder why people want to be part of the Greek system... in this case, probably cuz there's nothing else going on in Indiana.
