Ok, so now
Now what?
Dishes in the sink and a chunk of the baguette lay splayed on the kitchen table. Pack up the jam, wrap up the pate, and toss the left-over butter into the garbage. There's a spider crawling on the right side wall; working his way up to the corner and then down to the windowsill.
"If you can be anything in the world at all, what would you be?"
"Well, I'd be a spider crawling on the yellow wall."
"What about other walls, like that pale green slab over there?"
"What about what? I'm crawling on this wall. Talk to me later, will ya?"
For a third world country, Vietnam has treated me well. I am living better here than I did in the States. Good food, modern conveniences and best of all, a great work schedule.
I found my first jazz club that served Vietnamese food yesterday. Sat in the shadows of expatriates and listened to a balding mustachioed man blow his guts out while the smells of fried spring rolls and cigarette smoke curled 'round the orange lights.
It's hard to keep my eyes off the television in the kitchen. Vietnam gets the best that American TV has to offer -- MTV, American Idol and Faux News dominates. One channel I am beginning to love is Star Movies. Even here, it's so easy to procrastinate.
Perhaps I should relocate to Puku Cafe, where instead of those god-awful Tatu girls gyrating away, I can be distracted by the tuna melt instead. I mean, seriously! They can't even speak English correctly and yet they're belting out songs in English (admittedly, ones with the same 3 or 4 lines repeating) -- in unison! C'mon. At least attempt to harmonize.
Sad to say that I long for the days of Christina and Britney (school girl era) where pop stars had some talent. Did I just say that?
Near my neighborhood is a bookstore gem. I spoke too soon in my previous post -- I do not long for Barnes & Noble. The Bookworm is a far far better option about a five minutes walk from my apartment. I don't know how long it will last and I don't know how long Vietnam can hold out from the multi-nationals of Starbucks, B&N and McDonalds – but for now, it's an dive where I can go and stock up on brain candy.
