Once
It has been the best movie I've seen this year. Perhaps I'm a sucker for great music and the artist's journey.. but for those who want to believe in the saving powers of faith, of music and love – this is the movie for you.
I saw Once today. Within the first ten minutes, the music, the screenplay, had siphoned one of my shadow selves out -- celebrating the joy of capturing the artistic spark, of the creative flow between two people, like some sort of glorious chi that flow back and forth and out and beyond.
I wanna get back to that moment. That split second where its joygoodohso!!!good-euphoric. Like what? Like: Nothechordis G-thenEminor-then-- Wanna lower that a bar? No how bout the base line go something like this? Like what? Like, like you know how it goes mmmth mmmth then bppp bppp, well we gotta move it, really move it ya know? I know I know, how bout a drop aft the C# then add in that melody line, like we need an alto, maybe maybe? Yeah. Yeah! There it goes, keep that.. oh yea. Rock it. Rock the shit out of that. Hey, that piano line, how bout like.. like there yeah. Da da dadadad da doo... And I'll come in on three, ok? Great.
It has been the best movie I've seen this year. Perhaps I'm a sucker for great music and the artist's journey.. but for those who want to believe in the saving powers of faith, of music and love – this is the movie for you. It's a real look – all the grittiness of life on display – at how we're all tossed and thrown against the wind in this world – and how sometimes, just for the briefest of moments, our paths cross – friction – and a spark rises up – and what it means to be human: to love, to desire, to hope, to regret, to dream, to attempt – all that it means to be alive is then illuminated.
The characters have no names. Boy is a busker. Girl is a hawker of roses. Boy meets Girl. Girl inspires Boy. And they make great music together.
If you have rhapsody or iTunes, check out real life Glen Hansard (Boy). And his co-songwriter, Marketa Irglova (Girl).
It's one of those movies that makes you want to sit down and bang out 50 pages. Or 20 solid lines. Or 10 sketches. Or something.. something crazy to make it feel like you're actually here. In the flesh.
Five out of five stars.Rock it.
