Race and VTech killer
A couple of things about the VTech media coverage:
- Why the focus on the fact that the kid is a 'Korean national'? What does that have to do with it? Was McVeigh a 'US national', was Columbine by 'American nationals'? What, I don't get it? The guy has been in the States since elementary school. But every media story mentions that the guy is a Korean national.
- The attempt by NYTimes to tie a photo to Korean pop culture, a film. Again, the race card. What about the other photos that looks like Pulp Fiction, or Kill Bill? This exemplifies the race card on TV, print and the blogosphere.
- Why is the Korean (and to some extent, Asian) community apologizing? The kid may look Asian, but what does race have to do with this? The guy had problems that are cross-cultural and boundaries.
Let's see how this plays out.
My favorite one was the story about how his sister works in aid programs for Iraq.....OOOOOHHHHH GASP! Oh my! How SCANDALOUS!
Ummmmm, HUH? What does that have to do with anything?????? Yes, all comes down to ratings, newspapers sold and page views. Nice.
