The Return of Madness

I am not even going to get into apartment searches, headhunter fees, job hunts and all the other stuff.  Getting internet service set up is already a headache.

It's hard for me to reconcile myself being back in the States – especially when for the past five days I've been camped out on the beach, slapped around by the tides, and scoffing down coconuts and pineapples like a majaraja (I even have my own beach umbrella and a spot near the fruit vendor).

But I've been cheating – I've been looking at some stuff online in order to get ready for the return and...

What the hell is up with cell phone plans?  Overseas, I buy a phone for $10, hop into a booth/shop/house/street corner with a poster advertising telecommunications service, and plug in a SIM card.  Done.  But I've been on CNET for hours trying to distinguish between different coverage rates, messaging capabilities, megapixel resolutions, media enhancements and phone colors and I still don't have a phone.  Nighttime roaming, weekend free minutes, rollovers ... and I thought the Third World was inefficient.

I am not even going to get into apartment searches, headhunter fees, job hunts and all the other stuff.  Getting internet service set up is already a headache.

And of course, I'm looking forward to being inundated with all the holiday sales, specials and messages about the 'spirit of the season'.  I can already see my finger quivering over the mousekey as the cursor fidgets off and on the 'checkout' button for j.crew, banana republic and all the other grazing grounds for the yuppie herds..

I digress.  Must concentrate on waves, palms, and sand.  Two more days.

Americans have too many options, which ends up handicapping our decision-making.
