Tom Yum Soup
I love tom yum soup. It's an all-for-nothing kind of soup where you can just put about any ingredients in after you get the soup base right. Prawns, chicken, beef, noodles, rice, fish -- whatever you want. The soup itself is oh-gawd spicy... and sour. From what I can tell, it's a base of galanga, lemongrass, chili peppers, kaffir lime leaves and some spices. I usually have the vegetable one. I've had so much spice here that I'm starting to break out.
Malaysians think I'm Japanese while Singaporeans think I'm Chinese. The Chinese think I'm Chinese cause China is huge. In college, kids thought I was Malaysian. In Vietnam, they think I'm Thai.. or Singaporean. And to some wiseasses out there, I look Mexican.
I've noticed that people give me a pause, then a strange look, then the answer I'm looking for when I pose a question in small towns. Like the one I'm in now – Cherantut. It's basically a strip of bars and stores on a road facing a long stretch of beach. "Where's the bus ticket office?" I would ask. Pause. Look. Then: "Uh.. just walk down the road a little bit. You'll see it."
I'm a dumbass.
(But I'm a dumbass who has spent the day wake boarding! Woooowweeee! Now time for some soup).
wait....you are not mexican????
