Went to see Talib Kweli last night at Spirit with Claudia and Jess. Jean Grae was also on as was some other "soul" person. Best part of the night was when Jess and I cracked up for a solid 5 minutes straight trying to figure out what the soul singer was moaning about. It was a bunch of:
- Everybody say "Yeeeeaah"
- YAAAARRRRRR
- Ooo-OOOOH, sayit wit me!
- WOOOOOOAAAAOOH
Jean Grae was good; really loved her "A Way with Words" - her toughness and strong womaness showed through her lyrics. When Talib came out and everyone went crazy. For most of the night, we and a couple of other girls had a booth on the top floor, with a view of the dance floor below. Had some skunk Miller Lites and Jess shared her candy. When Kweli came out, we went downstairs and Claudia's friend Peter pushed us to the front of the pit. I was between two lesbians and a dude that's about 7 feet tall, and we were lodged between a bunch of other sweaty arms legs elbows and writhing bodies. But none of it mattered when Kweli started to crank it up, improvising and battling – he called a couple cornfed white guys up to the stage to show their breakdance stuff — and went through some old school songs with his high school buddies from Brooklyn Tech during the encore.
Came home at 1 am, had some ramen and crashed at 3 am.
