A Tale of Two Bags
So after I lost my bag, I was on the prowl for a new bag. In New York, it's pretty important to have a good bag. You want to separate yourself from the pack (for me, mainly from the Eastpack toting tourists and the schoolkids). You also want it to be functional. I needed a bag that would hold my laptop, camera (bulky SLR), moleskin, water bottle, and other stuff. And before you call me out for being a girl, I also carry a huge Swiss Army knife everywhere I go – so uh, there.

I zoomed in on the distressed leather look cause I've been wanting one for a long time. I got one from JCrew for $200 -- basically the cheapest kind of all-leather bag I could find. It reminded me of the old-school Indiana Jones bag. Which was good, cause if I had to go back to university, I would have totally graduated with a degree in 'treasure hunting'.. or archeology.
But after carrying the thing around for the past two weeks, my back has been going crazy. Really sharp pain flares. But hey, the bag looked good! Pain. Style. Pain. Style?
Anyways, I caved in. I grew up and swapped the good looking bag for a Brooklyn Industries canvas bag instead. Much more function (it turns from a messenger bag into a backpack) with a built in laptop compartment and a bunch of other cool features. I may not be treasure hunting any time soon, but heck, if I ever do, my back will be up for it.
Oh, and I just got my lost bag returned today. I had left it in the garden and the gardener found and stored it in the shed. He also put flyers around the neighborhood looking for the bag's owner. It's very good news, as now I have my passport back, along with a $200 check I haven't cashed. Go me.
It's funny how finding the perfect bag is like looking for the fountain of youth. If we could only design our own bags.
