I haven't worked in about two years. 1 year, 10 months and 3 days, if you're keeping count. What I should mean is that I haven't worked in the traditional sense: commuting to the office, holing up in a cubicle, obsessively adjusting the ergonomic chair because it’s supposed to be ergonomic – things that I apparently have forgotten.
I've done other things instead, like writing a memoir and backpacking and over-thinking my delusions.
And so it was with some trepidation that I re-entered the work force, this time within a large Silicon Valley corporation responsible for (a lot of your) Internet traffic in the world. What did I find – what did I realize after my first few days? The workplace, for all of its warts and soul-sucking is a pretty hi-larious place. And since I'm going to try this working thing (again), hoping to grow up, I may as well have a little fun with it.
I'm not really supposed to talk about it much. The lawyers and PR people came in during orientation and cajoled, threatened and teased us new hires with stories of leaked information, darkly hinting at the possible consequences if any of us as so much as utters any sliver of news to our friends, parents, significant others and pets. Dire warnings, indeed. But I can't help myself, so this blog will see a little more of my observations as a cog in the very quirky world of Internet tech.
Of course, the idea is already out there (it’s called the Office, on NBC), but hopefully one day I’ll look back on this episode as a worthy exercise in futility. But first thing’s first: I’m typing this post on my commute home in the company shuttle… mobile wifi! …. And now I have a headache.
Do you really listen to self-important, paranoid rants??? hahaha :) just kidding
