It's been two weeks since orientation, and I'm still disoriented. My title says one thing but the way other people interact with me and their expectations of me says something different.  Sean, my manager, said that titles don't really matter here, but that's cause his title is pretty awesome and he's only a year older than me.  Another guy, Khurram, joined at the same time and while I think he may have my title, he's three years younger than me.. and from the same school, too.

Khurram's manager sits across from me and he's supposed to be this awesome quant guy, a real fast climber on the ladder.  He seems to know what he's doing.  Then again, he totally reminds me of my friend Quyen, who does give off the vibe that he knows everything, too.  They even look the same.  I bet I can use the up-and-under move on this guy, just as I do for Quyen, on the basketball court, and I'd score.  Tall people may have the height advantage but they aren't that quick.

Anyways, the Quyen-clone, Quincy, reports to Sean.  I originally applied for a position that reported to Quincy, but coming in, I report directly to Sean now since Khurram has that slot, along with a bunch of other cool responsibilities, including one very dear to my bookmark list.  So does that mean that I'm at Quincy's level?  Not really.  That's because Quincy's peer, Jim, who handles one of the products that I'm responsible for somehow ought to fit into this picture.  Jim used to be a journalist, but now he's doing finance and biz dev.  I'm supposed to work with him, but I don't know if working with him means I report to him or if I just help him out.  It's all a lot of nuanced speech that I've yet to get the hang of.
.
So take that and add in a bunch of corporate systems that needs learning, and acronyms – my goodness people love acronyms around here – and processes and all the other junk and I'm pretty much working straight through the day.

Hopefully once things settle down I'll meet some people, maybe join a sports league or something.  For now, I'm just resisting the urge to log onto Facebook every hour.

Steady job. Cubicles. Joining a sports league. Is it possible we're growing up, finally?

know what i caught myself doing today? my roommate was saying that she thinks tattoos on arms are hot. i interjected "But would you marry someone with tattoos all over his arms?" and she goes "yeah!" Then I realized - I used to think the same thing when I was 24 also. Somewhere along the way, my free spirit changed and started conforming to standard ideas of propriety.

Do you think it's a sign of us giving in? Or just a sign of maturity?
